Anyone out there have any ideas? anything for sale? recommend any models?

Check out vince's ad for a VMI piston Neptune. I played the horn a couple of days ago and it plays well.

There's a 6/4 Holton that was done by Bob Rusk at Baltimore Brass. David Fedderly actually played this one in the Baltimore Symphony for a bit and the trombone section loved the sound of it. I just bought another tuba from them, but this one definitely piqued my interest. It's on sale for $8995. It's worth a look, for sure.

Couple things...

I think he meant "2165s" as in 'the 2165 tubas are $8995,' not that they are silver plated.

The 2265 isn't $18,000 either...$11,895 in lacquer. Add $700 for silver (as per Dillon's website) and you're looking at $12,595...actually $1,400 less than the going rate on a new 2000 at Baltimore Brass. Dillon's still has $12,495 listed.

Yeah, I meant 2165s as in plural, not silver (I know it's confusing, but I REFUSE to use apostrophe-s to show plurlism, which in this case would be easier, though it's a pet peeve of mine.)

I agree with you 100% on the point of trying the horn first, hence my saying "if you can get to wwbw." I'll tell you this, though... if I were in a position to be spending just south of 10k on a BAT, I'd be on the way to South Bend NOW to try some of these... this seems like a good price to me seeing as how Dillon (who to this point has ALWAYS gotten my tuba spending dollars, even when I was living out in Idaho) wants $10995 for a new 2165.

There's a VMI 6/4 piston CC at dillonmusic.com for about 6 or 7000. It's the piston version of the Neptune. They are pretty good horns, but I don't know about the intonation.

They had several large CC's when I just went to the site on the first page. A Willson, a PT-7P, and a Willson 3050S rotary. I play a piston Willson, and it has an incredibly dark sound, the rotary Willson has to be the darkest sounding tuba on the market.
