FS: Sanders/MW45 F-Tuba - Sold! pending funds!

Post by Frank Ortega »

For Sale:

This is an MW45 F-tuba marked Sanders from the '70's or 80's. It's in great shape and I've had some modifications made. I had the thumb ring that was uncomfortable removed and a bar brace put in it's place with a new thumb trigger. I also had the lead pipe taken off the bell and re tacked on a slight angle. There had been solder all around the bell/lead pipe constricting resonance. Also had the strap rings and nutcracker removed. This work was done by Chuck McAlexander at the Brasslab in Brooklyn, NY. Additionally I had the small side of the main slide reversed by Martin Wilk. He also added an interesting brace to that slide. All of this has positively affected the playability of the instrument. It has that beautiful, classic MW sound that is far superior to the new Chinese knock offs. Intonation is very good. The usual D,Db, and C stuffiness applies, but I believe the mods made this more manageable.

Why am I selling? This horn brought me through a difficult period when I thought I might not play the solo lit ever again. Fortunately, I've turned those difficulties around, and believe it's time for an upgrade.

This is an ideal horn for a young college student on a budget.

Comes with a protech gig bag.

Asking $3600.00 + S&H.

I have seen Frank's Sanders F tuba. It is in excellent condition. There are a few modifications, which were done with highly professional workmanship.

The most important mod was to raise the lead pipe off the bell. This allows the bell to vibrate freely and enhances the quality of sound.

Frank play-tested his Sanders F against my Meinl-Weston F (Model FR-5). Both instruments have the leadpipe raised off the bell, and their performance is quite comparable. The Sanders has beautiful tone, mellow with bright highlights. Frank played the Sanders indoors and also on my front porch. The Sanders held its own very well in both spaces.

Great for a first F tuba. It plays quite well and the price can't be beat. It's got that great German bass tuba sound. The mods definitely helped this tuba play even better.

I spent some time with this F tuba recently, and if I had the funds, the space, and an agreeable spouse I'd definitely make an offer.

This horn sings beautifully - top to bottom. Its mid-range speaks with an ease of play and fast response that keeps you coming back for more face-time; I didn't want to put it down!

This instrument is ideal for a performance major, grad student, or semi-pro. Played great with a Laskey 30H and a custom Greg Black piece with Laskey-style rim. Hope it gets a good home (wish it were mine!).
