Wessex

Post by bisontuba »

Hi-
I know Jonathan posted this in the sponsor section and I am posting this not on his behalf but because of the deals. As a collector of old antique horns, when I see replicated ophicleides and quinticlaves at 50% off list--which makes them sooo much cheaper than what just a typical restoration will cost ( forgetting the amount it costs to even find & buy an unrestored antique)--I am posting this for fellow 'Clyde' players ( as I'll do on other sites also). Everyone can learn to play these instruments at these prices.
Incredible...if someone had told me this 30 years who, I would have laughed...
Mark

It also seems like you can get a brand new 2-valve bass trombone for just over $600. That's crazy!

Yes, but with those updates, I also see that they seem to have raised the prices of their tubas, or at least their Fs. The Strauss will now cost you $3650-3950 which is about a 14% increase over what they were yesterday (the Strauss was only $3450 in Silver yesterday when I checked). :?

Not that they aren't worth it, but that isn't the best thing to see when you are browsing their site after being drawn in by the BF pricings. (And I know they didn't state any discounts on these horns, but I wasn't expecting an increase.)

The Strauss price increase is simply down to the production cost of those tubas being higher than most and us previously selling artificially cheap. For a less expensive F tuba, do consider the Berg. They are getting much praised by everyone that tries.

Thanks for the unexpected plug Mark. This weekend is probably a one off chance to pick up ophicleide for such a price. Even includes tutor book by Tony George to learn to play.

I am no trombone expert, but understand it is a clone of a King 7B, but Chris Stearn of Scottish Opera found it plays better saying;
The bass is that often seen copy of the King 7B indi bass... but the Wessex model has the nickel silver slide outers and red brass bell that other importer's instruments do not. This trombone blew very well indeed.... better than any 7B that I have played !!!!! You really could use it in an orchestra..... far more easily than some other far more expensive makes.

I haven't received it yet but they are (I believe) a copy of the Yamaha Xeno Bass that goes for over $3000. I've heard very good things about them and am looking forward to getting the horn.

We have had both designs in the past, and have decided on stocking the model which we have got best professional feedback - although the one that looks rather like a Xeno, the 831 is also good trombone.

We will get that model to special order, but obviously not at Sale price.

You might not find all of your wishes for half price ... but the full price is worth every nickel, and in addition the service is excellent.

I had two years ago bought a 830 indy bass bone, silver plated from Wessex. One part of the slide was plated too thin, and the plating did worn away over 1 1/2 year. The rest of the instrument is in excellent shape, and I love it for playing Big Band and street music. I talked to Jonathan about the plating issue, and got a good and extra-heavy silver plated replacement slide delivered for free. This I call good service !!!!

Correction of above post: It's the special order model

Jinbao / Wessex
Bb/F/Gb/D bass trombone
Model: JBSL-831S Bass trombone
Finish: silver plated
Model Reference: Yamaha 613H / Xeno 830 / Courtois 502R
Bore: 14.3mm
Bell: 241mm gold brass
Slide: Cupronickel inside and outside slide

I was talking about, clearly Yamaha Xeno 830 copy, and very well-playing too! Rotaries need to be cleaned once every year, but that is what I do with all of my instruments once a year. Great horn for Big Band and Street music, in this context I prefer it over my Kruspe bass bone.

I sent email to Jonathan, got response very promptly.

"We have actually sold out of current stock of bass trombone, but will sell at same price as back-order for one of next batch arriving February. Price is $612.50, but must be paid before Monday to gain Black Friday offer.
To order contact Andy Loree. As will be from next batch, it will be shipped from Michigan.
Best Wishes,
Jonathan "

If you have ready cash, it wouldn't hurt to email and ask anyway what kind of deal is available.
