WTB: old Eb tuba

Post by bwhitney916 »

I'm looking for an old Eb tuba with front action pistons. Preferably a Conn, and preferably 4 valves, but anything with front actions pistons would be of interest, and I'm really not worried about what shape it's in. I'm just looking for a gig horn, so it doesn't need to be anything particularly nice, just (mostly) playable and A=440ish.

Anybody have anything like that kicking around that they'd like to unload?

Thanks!

Hey Mark,

That looks like a beautiful horn! I was hoping to find something for under $500, and could maybe go up to $1000 if I found the perfect thing. I can't imagine you'd want to let go of yours for that, but if you do, I will happily buy it right now :)

Hey Mark,

Yeah, that's a killer horn for sure, and I am looking for a beater. That said, I'm pretty into Eb tubas these days and very rarely using F tubas, and I have a really nice Meinl Weston 45 with 5 rotors that I almost never play anymore if that was of any interest to you.

I have a 3 valve Conn like Mark's and a really sweet playing King.

Cool horn Mark. Is that the medium/"Professional" model? Between Standard and Giant? Perfectly priced using the formula of doubling the value for each add'l valve, plus a couple hundred for the deluxe bag.

I just bought a mid 20's Conn Eb, likely a 12-J, very similar to the modern 12J in design and all dimensions but in Eb and with pre-valve tuning. Will review when it comes in, I haven't seen any report specific to the model. Seems like the Giant has a bad intonation rep and Standard isn't much more than a euph, so the Professional should be just right. Praying for modern pitch and tight valves in the meanwhile.

If it doesn't have to be piston-valve, you might consider this one. It's certainly old:

Hello all,

For sale is a Conn monster/giant Eb in tarnished silver. Bell is 20" and not terribly dented. Would make for some some great parts. The bell will supposedly fit a 186 and the bell+bottom bow a King 1241/2341 (or chop it up and put it on a sousaphone  ). This one does NOT seem to have an engraving, but everything looks the part (Conn).

I am asking $300+greyhound from Phoenix, AZ.

Pictures will be posted this weekend.

Please PM any questions, thanks! :tuba:
