FS: Mack Brass F Cimbasso $2,500 -Sold-

I'm in a position where I somehow have two cimbassos (cimbassi?) so I'm selling this one. It's in F, 5 valves with a 1st valve kicker. It has a small easily removable dent in the bell section around the size of a dime and the valves are a little loud for my liking. Other than that, the instrument is in good mechanical condition. Included is a Wessex hard case in good condition. The case is a major upgrade over the Mack Brass case the instrument came with.

I've used it to solo with bands at WU and the Carolinas Wind Symphony, I've also played it with the Fayetteville Symphony, Charlotte Civic Orchestra, Opera Carolina, and the Rock Hill Symphony. It's a good instrument, I just like the other one better.

I'll chime in with my two cents. I traded a G&P cimbasso for a Wessex cimbasso plus cash (cash towards me). It was a win/win. The person who wanted a G&P is at a more professional level than I and needed one with hugely fat low notes. I wanted one with a more trombone-like sound quality and characteristics. In fact, I use the Wessex cimbasso when I need to be really soft, such is playing along with a small choir, etc. I also use it in a fairly loud jazz band, playing 4th or 5th trombone parts. Personally speaking, I found the big piston valves on the G&P a bit of a hand strain - especially since the pistons point straight out. The rotors on the Wessex aren't the best by any means, but they're easier for me to whip around on than the big pistons. I would guess that the Mack Brass cimbasso is very similar to the Wessex. For my purposes, I find it more versatile than the G&P. That's just me. I'm older and don't have big hands, so I'm not a 'big pistons' kind of guy.

Here's another thing to consider: I found the G&P very difficult to play with a tuba size mouthpiece, even an F or Eb size one. It just sucked the air right out of me. The Wessex is easier to play with a larger mouthpiece, and works fine with a contrabass trombone m.p. as well. I'm not trying to sell you on the Mack Brass, but I think these smaller rotary cimbassos are quite versatile. I find it a lot of fun to play.

I hear the same thing. The Mack sounds more trombone-like than the G&P. The Mack is a fine instrument for my purposes, I like the G&P better overall.
