I haven't played in more than 2 decades and want to start playing again. I've been monitoring this board and several other places, but haven't yet found something in the price range I'm hoping to stick with. I just ran across a posting for a silver Schiller tuba (BBb 4 rotary valve) for $1,800, with hard case. I know there are mixed opinions on Schillers, but it seems like the next step up would more than double the cost.
Thoughts? Should I?
Should I buy this Schiller

Will you have a chance to play it first? Certainly the price is reasonable.

If you're patient, you can likely find a nice used Miraphone 186, or an old style King 2341 or King 1241 for just a little bit more. Cerveny 681s also pop up occasionally for 1-2k. All four valve horns.
Chinese horns' rotary valves are pretty hit or miss, mostly miss in my experience having owned several. Check Facebook Marketplace along with the forums. Where are you located? I browse nationally regularly and can keep an eye out.

Thanks for the advice! I am impatient so I decided to get it and hope for the best. I figure if I play it a lot and want to upgrade I can always resell it.arpthark wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2024 11:07 pm If you're patient, you can likely find a nice used Miraphone 186, or an old style King 2341 or King 1241 for just a little bit more.
