Here is a Meister Gerhard Schneider tuba that was made in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989). It is a great playing tuba with a Germanic sound much like its competitor the Alexander 163 but with better pitch tendencies. It is somewhat of a derelict having spent time and endured abuse in the Texas school system perhaps destined for the scrap pile. I've put lots of time and effort into bringing it back. I've patched the upper bow where cracks (common on this model) had developed, extended the tuning slide a little to bring it down to A=440 and replaced the skimpy original braces with heavier ones. This model is still in production as the B & S 3301 which does not have the bell Kranz but does have a larger 19" bell and high price tag. There remain lots of cosmeti flaws, but the valves are tight and slides function well. It does have the old "S" style valve linkage which is a bit noisy and which we can change out for an additional cost. Intonation is quite good with just some small adjustments of the first valve slide. It's fun to play and has even response in all registers. Bare brass with some remaining original lacquer. The low register really rocks!
