SOLD: Wessex Gnagey Eb tuba

Post by tubamarc8891 »

Up for sale is my Wessex Gnagey 5V Non-Compensating Eb tuba designed by renowned tuba builder Samuel Gnagey. This 5 year old tuba served me exceedingly well while I was a member of the Navy Fleet Bands. While in the Navy, I was primarily in brass quintet and this instrument really excelled in that setting. This is an extremely versatile tuba that could be useful for many different situations.

The strength of this tuba is the low and mid register. It has the most secure low range of any bass tuba I have ever played. It is a fantastic ensemble bass tuba that thrives when playing with others. It also certainly holds its own as a solo instrument.

Intonation is very good from pedal Eb to Eb in the staff. Some slide pulling is required in the low register but the convenient placement of the 4th valve slide makes adjusting easy. Above the staff, some alternate fingerings are necessary. I could give specifics if desired.

There is a fair amount of lacquer wear. This was a result of me leaving it in the bath tub too long during a cleaning. There were also some creases in the bell that needed to be rolled out. The important parts- valves and lead pipe- are in great working order. The valves are fast and silent. The valve caps are not what you typically find on other Wessex models. These ones screw on very easily and are reminiscent of Yamaha valve caps. I really wish Wessex would use these on their other models!

Contrary to what many may fear with Chinese made instruments, this tuba has held up very well between multiple cross country flights and performances on aircraft carriers, destroyers, and in aircraft hangers.

I really think this is a great instrument and could suit someone looking for a versatile tuba. It could also be great for someone who is older and doesn’t want to strain to play a contrabass horn.

Here are some links to me playing the instrument:

Do you have any close up photos of the horn itself? Just to get an idea of the lacquer condition. And is this the TE465 variant? Just asking as I'm not sure if Sam only made the one Eb for Wessex.
