After careful consideration I am putting my Rudi Meinl 4/4 CC w/ Cronkhite gig bag up for sale or trade. It is a great instrument with a lovely dark tone. I've enjoyed playing and owning it for sure, but it's time to let it go.

According to Lee Stofer this tuba is about 40 years old. It's in great shape for its age but it has been well loved. There are no dents to speak of but, it has certainly had some work over its 40 years. There is a small patch that was added to the bell. The valves are very quick and light.

The horn was ultrasonically cleaned and serviced a few months ago. It also had the main slide worked on by bloke so it's super smooth.

Price: $6500 (no shipping)
Location: Birmingham, AL
Travel: I am willing to drive 2-4 hours from Birmingham to meet

Trade Interests: 4/4+ CC or F tubas. Primarily interested in piston horns

I'm shopping for a sole orchestral horn; no budget for an F. Can this essentially do it all? Rudi Meinl 4/4 sounds more like 5/4?

The patched bell is worrisome. Do I understand correctly: Lee Stoffer worked on it says it's good?

Thanks

Thank you for your interest. Can it do it all? There is plenty of repertoire that is best suited to an F tuba. But this is a solid contra-bass CC tuba. As far as size, Rudi Meinls are usually on the conservative side of sizing. It's definitely a larger 4/4. The bell patch was put on the horn several owners ago to address a thin spot. In 2025, I had a local repair person (https://www.katixmusic.com/) remove the patch, smooth out the bell as close to 100% as possible and put back the patch. I would say Katy did a MUCH better/cleaner job that the previous person did.

The previous owner said that Matt Walters has had the horn in his possession for a basic cleaning and he spoke highly of the horn. I can't independently vouch for that. That is just what I was told. Having had both Matt and Lee work on my horns before, I don't believe either one did the patch or some of the other previous soldering. Katy did a lot of solder clean up work. There's a thread on the tubaforum where I posted some of the "glow up" work she did.
