What does this mean? Piston valves, right? I gather that the tuba's natural bore is not large, so the bore through the valves is larger than the bore around them?

Interesting, but your explanation raises more questions than it answers, for me anyway. Not a big deal for me -- in the interest of a harmonious household I should really not be acquiring any more tubas at least until I get rid of my 40K -- but I have a feeling this may be a more elegant creation than than it is portrayed. Too bad you can't post a picture.

[quote="hailstorm2"]Yes, this is Harv's creation from eBay last year. It's been a good horn to get me going again and I've since "traded up" if you will.

As for the bore, it seems that Harv removed from the lead pipe, through the valves, to where it connects to go on out the bell. My best guess is that he used the valves and their corresponding piping from a large Conn short action piston sousa and attached them. I can send a pic if you PM me with your email address and this might make more sense by seeing it. Otherwise, I hope this helps to explain it better. Or, if Harv is reading, he can chime in also.

Hi this is Harvey Hartman from Harvs Happy Horns Yes this a tuba that I put toghter .It played very nice. The Body is a Conn 12J or 10J with a Conn 20K Short action sousaphone valves section so the bore would be (.734 I THINK) .It has a New 20J leadpipe on it. So the horn tunes at were the sousaphone would NOT were the 10J would. That pipe was taken out.The of the 10J bell flair was cut off because it was bet up, A bell flair from a 14K sousaphone was put in place. So it has a 24 ince bell. The Horn played Great & In tune and was a good buy for a someone to start playing again. Sorry I dont have pictures any more. I built a 2nd horn all most like this one, with a Conn 20J valve section and 12J body. I built it for the guy after he played and saw the first one But he needed top action valves because of his eyes. He playes a 20J conn but its getting to tuff to lug around. He wanted something smaller with short action top action valves. So we found 2 horns that need help and made one good one .He is very happy with the horn. I hope this helps if you want to talk to me about it call 610-367-7232 I would be happy to talk you. Thanks Harv.

It is not. I should do something about that, but I ... don't know how to post a picture! (Nor do I even have a picture, come to think of it.)

Maybe it's better after all that there be no picture of the Big Bell BBb, and instead we each take away our own idea of the form such a thing might take.

Or, if I've emailed you a pic and you know how to post it, that might also be helpful!
You need to host it online somwhere, like ImageShack.

Then you reference it using the IMG tag. ImageShack will give you sample code for doing that. Us the code marked "Forums"
Or email me the picturse and I'll put them up.

Wish I had a grand for a horn :(
