How much an instrument is worth

How would I go about finding how much a horn I want to sell is worth? Its actually a valve trombone, and it isn't produced anymore, so I don't have a new price to compare it to. It was made by DEG I believe under the name caravelle classic. I want to find roughly how much its worth before I bring it to the local music store to sell it to them, or sell it striaght to an individual. Do you think I should contact DEG?

There is a DEF Classic 800 vt on Ebay right now. Current bid is $250 with reserve met. Four people have bid to date.

That may give you some reference point. You may also want to check the Online Trombone Journal Forum for posts or listings.

again...thanks for the advice! Being a teenager who doesn't have a job, I am selling some old instruments that I don't use. From experiences....what works better... Selling it to a music store, or selling it to an individual, or ebay? What have peoples experiences been?

individual should work for trumpet and guitar....but the valve trombone might be more challenging

Remember if you sell to a store they will only pay you wholesale value or less, especially if they have to service a horn in order to make it more appealing to a buyer. They need to resell at a profit. Your best bet would be to sell it outright even if you have to resort to using Ebay. Good luck.
