need BBb tuba for a student

Post by octavelower »

Hi all,

I am trying to find a 4/4 (around a conn 5J size) 4 piston valved front action BBb tuba for a student. Please, if anyone is trying to sell one, let me know.

Corey

Corey,
I have a fine old Walter Sear/de Prins front action 4v BBb tuba that I was about to put up for sale. It plays much like a King 2341 that I had in high school--surprisingly big sound down low, nimble, and a singing high register. Bell diameter is 19 3/8", bore about .660".

Dennis Houghton and Vurl Bland at Houghton Custom Horns aligned the valves for me and installed nice quiet nylon valve guides. The valves are the fastest I've ever played.

The bell is beautiful--no dings or crinkles or repairs. The nickel plating (Walter Sear, reportedly a metallurgist as well as orchestral tubist, sound engineer, etc., always specified nickel) is 98-99%. It is a handsome horn and the only defects are some dime-size dings in the bottom bow cap that don't show when playing.

Let me know if you want more detailed info and photos. It is available for test. I am asking $1225.
