I like it - there are qualities of the SM4 and the Doug Elliott that I like. I'm going to see how the SM5 compares (since the rim size and cup size are closer to that of the DE).

Jeremiah,

Not sure what DE mpc you have, but I used to play on a Wick 5AL -- which is very close to an SM-5. When I met with Doug Elliott a few years ago, I told him I really liked the sound I get with the 5AL but I was playing too sharp on some notes. Doug had me try out several different parts and pieces and suggested the following set up for me...
  • LT-102 rim; LT-H cup; H8 shank
I've been using this setup for more than 2 years now on my Yamaha 641 and it works great for me. When I temporarily switch to the Wick 5AL, it feels exactly the same - except for playing sharp on those notes.

Hope this helps.

Hi Rick, didn't see your post before.

My Doug Elliott mouthpiece is an XT 101G/I/I8. I like it a lot. The only thing I don't like is that the sound isn't as "full" as the SM4.

I am still looking for an SM5 so I can see how the DE and the SM5 compare.

Thanks!
