I am a tuba player who has an interest in trying the trombone. I recently purchased an F.E.Olds w/F attatchment and I haven't recieved it yet but when I do I will know the bore size.

Anywho... which should I start with I heard that the old standby was a bach 6 1/2 AL? or a 12C let me know what I should try to help me save some money.
Also what about bass trombone mouthpieces? 1G an so on...

Q. What if the horn has a large bore? Should I just stick with the 6 1/2 AL and get an adapter?

If you will tell me which model olds you bought, I'll tell you the bore.

I double on a Schilke 50 with my King 3B. The cup is a little deeper than a Bach C cup, so my low range is not so gravelly, and the rim is rounded and comfortable so playing lead is not an issue. Everyone knows about the 51D euph, so in case you are not familiar with Schilke's numbering scheme, it's one size smaller in diameter and one size shallower in cup and medium backbore and rim profile.

You asked about bore. Do you mean shank size where the mouthpiece fits in? If shank size is an issue, there are basically two sizes, and most mouthpieces come in both, including most of the Schilkes, Bachs and others except the really small ones. If the bone turns out to be a bass bone instead of a tenor bone with F trigger, meaning larger shank, then eventually you will want to work up to something like a Schilke 59 or equivalent to get the most out of the low range of a bass bone.

A bored out 5G has a cool sound for orchestral orchestral playing. Otherwise you probably can't go wrong with the 6 1/2 AL as a doubler.
