Alexander 163 5V CC for sale

At the risk of saturating the market, here is another Alex for sale. Asking $5500 plus shipping. I'm still mystified as to how to attach photos, but I have some and will post as soon as I crack the code.

Finish is bare brass. 5th valve (2-3) converted to thumb action by a previous owner. Solid player top to bottom, with an especially responsive low register.

Intonation: I tend to play e (5th partial) 1-2, push 1st valve slide on d, and sometimes play G (3rd partial) 1-3 depending on key and where I am in the chord. Otherwise it's essentially "plug-and-play" for me. A bit more trouble than my Mirafone CC or my Besson E Flat, but nothing fatal or dire.

It's seen plenty of action - lots of dings in the bottom bow and 4th valve tubing, but nothing that affects that characteristic Alex sound, at least not to my ear.

I'll gladly throw in hard case and gig bag at no extra charge other than shipping.

Now asking $5000. More data: first thing I did when I acquired this horn was to have valves 1-4 serviced and evaluated for possible conversion to ball and socket. Gary Dafler (Hauer Music, Dayton, OH) got the valves so clean and quiet I decided conversion would be a total waste. As I've told some of you, this horn is a player. PS, the hard case is in mint condition, bought new and never used. It's not an Alex case (pretty sure it's PT) but it fits just fine.

Update - the gig bag is no longer for sale. The instrument is still for sale, though, and I'm still asking $5000 plus shipping for horn and hard case. Reasonable counteroffers will be entertained.

Alert - the horn is in Dan Schultz's able hands right now, getting a cosmetic makeover. As soon as I get it back I'll post new shots and re-re-re-evaluate the price. Earlier pictures document its prior condition, but don't do justice to its playing characteristics, which are first rate. I've moved on, playing-wise, to one of Sam Gnagey's "YorKing" CC's and this Alex is just too much horn for me to keep. New posting will follow in a couple of weeks.

Bumping because I got it back from Dan Schultz today. Dents are gone, 4th valve tubing has been reinforced with a patch. Unbeknownst to me, there was a small leak in the tube, now sealed, and low range response is incredible. Links to pics below. Now the horn looks almost as good as it plays. Price is back to $5000, plus shipping for horn with hard case.

When I bought my four-valve 163 (a 1959, I think) it had a couple small issues I wanted my repair guy to address. When I picked up the horn he said, "It's really a pleasure to work on a horn that was built right the first time." It's also a real pleasure to play. It takes a slightly different approach but, as Wade says, the rewards are many for those who try.

Extremely nifty, Elephant. The good news for Tuben is that this horn is, of course, a 5 banger, and the better news is (at least in my opinion) that it shouldn't need a 2nd valve kicker. Very cool nonetheless.

Had I kept this horn I would have connected a long tee, reaching from above Valve #1's crook to the tuning slide, with an adjustable stop, so as to enable the player to pull the main slide in for first line g and third line d. Those are the only notes I've ever had to futz with, and even then usually only when they are the root, 3d or 7th in a sustained chord.

I already miss this horn very much, but delight in Robert's passion. Now, readers, please believe me when I tell you I have a couple of really fine old Conn BBb's I need to sell as well. They aren't quite equal to the "Wizard," but cut a pretty mean rug themselves. New postings to follow.
