Has anyone played this horn? If so, what are your opinions of it?

If that is indeed the same horn (I recognize the brass spots in the top picture) that used to belong to a colleague of mine at Ithaca College, Matt Franco, then I have played that horn before.....some 5 years ago.

It is a great horn. The valves are very smooth, quick and nimble. Very nice sound and easily at home in any size group. I've always thought about getting that horn. I enjoyed it a lot. The only "weird" thing for me was the fifth valve rig. The is a thin ring that your thumb goes in for the throw. I would prefer a paddle or Meinl Weston/Matt Walters-esque setup. With that being said, the ring is no big deal.

Overall....it's a great horn. To be honest, I've been wondering why Dale has been having such a hard time selling his satin silver version seemingly the exact same tuba.

It is a slow market right now. I also think the problem might be that too many student tubists are influenced by "name brand" tubas. You know, a tuba made by somebody they've heard of. The same applies to the Marzan CC at Baltimore Brass. I think it's a sweet horn.

If you want a name brand tuba, how about a tuba made by Walter Nirschl: a Boehm and Meinl!
