Bob, You have misunderstood me - I don't use a sousa bit in mine, but just suggested you could try to change the angle.
Incidentally, I had a very interesting chat today with Mark Carter at Mr.Tuba who worked with M-W on the development of the 2040/5. Apparently, the 2040/5 is
not just a five valve version of the 2040, but also includes a number of other modifications, to improve intonation and tone. So if you have tried one version, do not assume the other will play the same - they are different animals!
I have never played a 2040, but it certainly sounds like it would be worth you paying the extra for a 2040/5. I can vouch for that being a superb Eb

Out of curiousity, about how long are the 4th valve slides?
No problem at all Bob - just wanted to set the record straight.
The 4th valve slide is just over 4" long - it could not be pulled anymore, or it would hit the bell!

How the hell can you guys play these things anyways?
You're thinking about it all wrong. You play the
mouthpiece. The horn is just a bunch of brass stuck on the end of the mouthpiece.

I just sorta suck on big tubas; too much bass trombone, euph, and midget tubas over the last few years no doubt.

Well, if you play bass trombone, its certainly not an air issue. Bass trombone takes considerably more air than a tuba.
