Kurath F tuba Sold!!!

Post by Ed Vinson »

I'm selling my Kurath (predecessor to Willson) F tuba 4 pistons 1 rotor, with Walt Johnson case and Altieri bag. This large F tuba was hand made in 1990, serial #09005. Beautiful, dark, mellow sound and AMAZING low register, better than any other F tuba, even the Yamahas. This tuba has won me 2 concerto competitions and got me into Juilliard. All slides work really well, amazing piston valves just aligned, vented, and tweeked by Alan Baer. A few small dings. Almost raw brass, gold laquer scores about 30%.
Pics available upon request.
$5,500.

Please email me off the forum.

I got to play Ed's Kurath a few summers ago and his description of the instrument is very accurate. Great tuba.

It's my understanding that the Kurath label dried up after they collaborated with the Perantucci guys. Willie Kurath wanted to modify the design and Perantucci wouldn't let him saying they designed the horn and he couldn't change it without their approval. So he cut off the tie with Perantucci, got his son to help him (Willie + son) and made the Willson company. Funny thing though, 2 of my friends and my old teacher Joe Skillen all played Kurath Perantucci F tubas but the valve set said Willson on it?!?! Mine is pre Perantucci built in 1990 and used to be laquer. All my other friends' Kuraths have great silver plating. The only other laquer Kurath I've seen belonged to David Randolph when I studied with him at Interlochen in 97 and 98. His too had lots of laquer wear, I think Adam Frey owns that horn now. Andrew Tucker told me he has one, I think it used to belong to Perantoni, and it had less laquer than mine. Also, UGA has a few that belong to the studio.
