In fact, they worked together in 1885 as "York and Holton" in Grand Rapids, just prior to Holton's moving to Chicago in 1886. They had a working relationship until at least 1906, and as you point out, quite possibly were the source for many of Holton's larger instrument parts.
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
