Hehehe... sure, I can throw the pencil in. However, for the pencil holder clip attachment, I'll need either either an extra two dollars (c'mon, who here's seen Better Off Dead w/Cusack?!?) or an amusing tuba related story posted to the forum.

I haven't played this particular horn, but 1291's are WONDERFUL instruments. Worth checking.

Hey, Doc!

It's not so much that I like the Firebird more than the 1291 since they are such very different animals. It's just that I have to downsize my gear right now, and the Firebird is just magical in my quintet and works very well in the smaller bands and ensembles I play in; whereas the 1291, with its monster bottom end, turns my quintet turns into: "Bryan and his four backing brass" since I'm not a strong enough player to be able to reign that thing in. Additionally, I've played BBb all my life and F for only a year now and I'm really wanting to help drive the new fingerings into my brain, since BBb fingerings are too ingrained to ever go away and I do intend to pick up another 1291 in a few years.

In case you're interested, I went through a whole bunch of different mouthpieces on the Firebird and actually found one that, to steal an expression from Rick Denney, "Glowed in the dark". For whatever reason, the G&W Bora mouthpiece just fits my embouchure and the Firebird perfectly and notes below the staff just LOCK into place and has a great tone to boot, though I also have a Baer F if I need to get a really sweet, mellow sound in the upper registers. Usually I would notice just subtle differences, if any, between various mouthpieces and intonation, but this was a dramatic improvement, which really surprised me -- it was almost as if Ivan took a molding of my puckerer and optimized it to work optimally.

Hey, Doc.

Both the Laskey 30C and 30F were good to use on this as well. Plus I also have an MF4 for a very different sound that I like as well, especially for the lower range.

Well, if you're interested, why not try the MF4-H? I ask, because I got my MF4 before Mike offered the Helleberg style rim variant (MF4-H) which I would prefer. And if a Helleberg rim isn't really what you go for but you like the sound of the piece anyway, we could do a swap!

I remember this horn and it was an extremely good example of the great Miraphone products. The tuning was fabulous and the sound awesome - with a low register to die for. If I didn't already own one of these babies, I'd be considering this one. It's a player! And this is a very good price for the package.
