MOUTHPIECE FOUND! And it's on its way!! Now we'll see if it is as I remember it.


Years ago I had an old Perantucci 20. Used it for everything. It, shall we say, "disappeared" one day a long time ago. (I have my suspects... )

I went to replace it, only to find it coincided with the time they changed their mouthpieces. They told me the PT-50 was essentially the same mouthpiece. Well, not really. It's just never been the same.

So I've been feeling nostalgic about it and wonder if anyone out there has one with which they'd be willing to part. For a reasonable price. Of course, I'm willing to pay a little more if it's in really great condition.

I wish I still had mine, too; I sold it at one point, when I was young and even more foolish.

Some of the early PT50s were close , if not identical, internally, but the outside blank is different, of course. Worst case scenario, if you can't find one, is to get a copy made with the old Tilz blank design.

I have a 20 I'm not using but I don't think it is very old. Someone enlighten me as to how to tell it's age. Or for that matter is a PT-20 always a PT-20. This one appears to be smaller than a PT-50. I measure the cup width at slightly over 31mm.

The rim size of the old 20 was definitely part of my preference. It wasn't that long between the time I "lost" my old 20 to the time I got the newer PT-50. They said it was the same as the old 20, so I bought it without hesitation, didn't even try it. The first note I blew I felt the difference immediately. I still use the PT-50 a lot, even prefer it to almost everything else I've bought over the years, but it's just not the same, and now I have a horn that I can't help but think the old 20 might feel really good on.

As far as the random numbering of the old mouthpieces, I had 2 Perantucci old-system mouthpieces; the 19, a mid-size F mouthpiece, and the 20, which I think may have been the largest mouthpiece they made (cup, throat and back bore). Old-Perantucci-mouthpiece Scholars feel free to correct me if I've remembered incorrectly.

I have a perantucci 20 that I purchased in the late eighties (1988 or 89) that I used briefly and then moved to different equipment. It has no nicks or scratches outside of the normal shank marks. It's a little tarniched and dusty but I can clean it up. I'd say it's in near perfect condition. Perhaps you'd be interested in this one? I haven't used it for at least 15 years.

The old Perantucci numbering system was derived from the Bruno Tilz system, since Bruno Tilz made them. The model 310-M1 was the old Perantucci 1, the Rudolf Meinl M-1, the Meinl-Weston M-1 and the Hirsbrunner M-1.

The shape of the Bruno Tilz model 310 series still has the more slender outside shape of the old Perantucci mouthpieces and the Rudolf Meinl mouthpieces, and I've always personally preferred the more slender mouthpiece profile.

I have already had a couple of inquiries in the past week about whether I could import the Tilz 310-M20. The answer is "yes", but Bruno Tilz, like most of Germany, is on vacation for the month of August. I should have some in September.

Why not just order a Tilz 20? Their site's in German, but Google can help.
