1914 Boosey & Co Imperial Eb

Post by Peach »

I've decided to see what interest there is in this tuba from 1914.

The pictures should pretty much speak for themselves...
However, here's some info:
Just like the Imperials from the 60's, 70's only noticeably lighter in weight.
If you look carefully at the pics you'll see the squarer bows & slides than the later Imperials.
Also the main tuning slide has same length (long) legs - the 4th valve sits a fraction higher than later Imperials/Sov's.
Bell is 15".
Small receiver.
Case is wooden from 1970's I think.
It has been overhauled, again in the 70's I think and the valve-tops and caps replaced with 'modern' (originals would've had cork bumpers). Obviously rarely played since the overhaul.
Yes, it's a low pitch conversion but it plays and sounds as good as it looks. Very easy top-to-bottom with excellent intonation.

I don't know what the story is with these. I've only ever seen this one as old as this. Anyone know?

If anyone is interested in the tuba, make me an offer and we'll talk. It's in England btw...

Very nice Peach!

A couple of years ago, before my shoulder injury stopped me playing top valve tubas, I would have been after this

What is your asking price? I may be interested in this depending on how it plays!

Old Boosey Eb 3+1

Post by DonnieMac »

Fancy this: I was practicing on one of those just this afternoon, SN 129,176. Got it back a month ago from a complete re-build and re-plating and valve alignment. The work cost a bit over US$6k and extended over 3 years. As a basket case I paid for it US$ 950. Like buying an old 650cc BSA motorcycle and doing a re-build.
Still getting into this horn and will play it in
a tuba-euph ensemble. BTW it has etched on the bell, "British Throughout."

That means it has Lucas electronics and only drinks warm beer!
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
