For sale or trade: 1913 Conn CC tuba 5/4; 4 pistons/1 rotor; length: 37.5"; width: 22"; bell: 20". Converted from Eb by Lee Stofer. Raw brass on the slides and valve section. BIG low register, middle register has some funky intonation but workable, upper register really sings. Comes with your choice of a "free" mouthpiece from my collection. No case or bag. $7700 firm or will trade for 4/4 Rudolf Meinl CC tuba. Great tuba but it's too big for me.

Having worked with Lee on this tuba somewhat, I can honestly tell you that this is a solid CC tuba. There are a few funky intonation things in the middle, but the horn has a great sound, and the intonation is workable in that middle section.

That was a project that Lee and I worked on in his garage in 1999-2002. We learned quite a bit about "measure ten times, cut once." We got it ready to play in the summer of 2000 and I remember blowing the main tuning slide out. That was the first fix. I also remember the g below the staff had incredible resonance. The valveset was one of the first Meinl-Weston BBb piston sets that was produced from their factory and not from Nirschl. We trimmed the inner and outer slides and brought it back to CC. While I owned it, I got lots of compliments on the sound and the blend that horn had in all the groups. The couple of quirky notes are very workable and Lee said he had improved the response and intonation of those notes since I last played it four years ago. The new owner will find that it has a blend of old-school sound and updated valves. Neat to see it again.
