Martin Recording Tuba for sale or trade

Postby Bandmaster » Tue Jun 03, 2008 4:12 pm

One of the community bands I play with and am a board member, the Pomona Concet Band in Southern California ( http://www.pomonaconcertband.org" target="_blank" target="_blank ), wants to sell or trade their 1930's era 3 valve Martin recording tuba. What we want is to obtain is a good 4 valve (in front) BBb tuba with an upright bell for members to use if they don't own a horn. We don't need it to be new or perfect but we do want a good player. The conductor does not want a bell front horn mixed in with the upright bell horns in the section.

The band purchased the Martin many years ago and we have many old photos of it in use in band's archives. The serial number is 11182X which places it around 1935. It is very nice condition with only minor dents. One of the third valve slides is stuck and a small 3/8" long crack in the leadpipe (note the black tape next to the receiver) are the only drawbacks. It has both mouthpiece extension bits and the valves appear to still be tight. I have played it a few times in a rehearsal and she still plays good. If you have a tuba you'd like to trade send me some photos! If you'd like to buy it, send me your offer!

OK, no takers yet for a trade, but several have asked about buying it outright. I had a chat with my fellow board members and we decided to ask for $1600 or best offer. Any takers?

Don't forget the "or best offer"...

Are you sure you still want her? She's probably older than you are by now. That photo is at least 40 years old!

Well, it seems we may have over valued this old gem a little. We had been told that these old Martins are still valuable an desired by jazz players. Were we told wrong? Dan Oberloh has one for sale on his website for $2100, so how for off can we be?

I have reduced our asking price a little to $1400. If no one here is interested I guess the next stop will be eBay.

BUMP!

The new price I edited above is $1400.

This is still a great old horn for the person that wants it.

You might just look into how much an upright bell would be, assuming that you could find one (any make) with the right tennon size...

Might be cheaper to buy a horn like this to just play outdoors or in something like a polka band where the direct shot of the recording bell might be welcome. Sometimes it is best to just leave a horn alone than to try to force it to do what you want it to do.

Every once and awhile an upright bell for a Conn 2xJ comes up on daBay but at a really high price- $500+

It does look like a ton o' fun, though....

I have heard rumors that Lee stofer can get you upright bells for these horns. Or you could get Kanstul to make one for this horn. They do great custom work at a very good price.
