My big worry/ turn off is that it has been painted gold. What would it take to re-laquer it? Any idea on cost?

Has anyone played a 5J? Good horn? Bad horn?

I'm still shopping around for a decent/ "affordable on a teacher's salary" type BBb horn.
Looks like it may just be raw brass rather than painted. A good lacquer job isn't cheap because it involves a fair amount of labor to get the horn buffed to a high shine and cleaned squeaky-clean,, but check with a local dealer.

The 5J's okay; it's kind of small bore (0.650-ish) and the 4th valve can be a little stuffy. You might do better with an Olds O-99, which is about the same size and plays a bit better, IMOHO.
