what does bump mean?

If the owner of the ad wants to keep it at or near the top of the list, he will reply to his own message on a daily basis, thereby "bumping" it up the list.

Thanks for clearing this up for me. Gee, using the word BUMP in such a manner seems like nothing more than a cheap, self-indulgent trick used to keep one's own interests above everyone else's.

I don't think the self-indulgent attitudes of bumping represents the unwritten code of tuba players. Most are pretty easy-going, regular guys(and gals, of course).
