I never had the opportunity to have it side by side with a 186 or a 188. Can someone help with this? Thanks.

Not a 188. Looks like a great tuba!

The bottom bow and bell seem 188ish to me. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me.

I have a 186 of that same vintage, and compared to my instrument the bell stack in the picture looks too big for a 186. The difference is especially noticeable where the leadpipe crosses the bell stack. Maybe it's just the photo angle or something, but that sure looks like a 188 to me.

It just looks too "skinny" to me, especially from the rear view, along the top branch and side of the body. The bend in the tubing after the valve block and before the tuning slide is interesting as well... I've never seen that on a CC Miraphone, but perhaps this was something they tried back then?
Also, I believe that in the mid 1970's, development had just started on the 188, and it wasn't really put into production until about 1980.
But who cares. This is the right tuba for the right price, and it won't last long.

Looks like at some point the lead pipe was off the horn. Could this be a replacement bell stack? Are 188 and 186 bell stacks the same length and interchangeable so that this is a 186 body with a 188 bell stack?

I've not seen a Miraphone CC with a 'dogleg' after the valve section. Usually, the pipe goes straight down.
Since the main bugle is shorter and compact on the CC Miraphones... it's easy to perceive the bell as being larger.
At any rate.... it should be easy to put the 186/188 argument to rest. What's the diameter of the bell flare?

My guess is a) prototype b) repaired with replacement parts of a different model or c) not a 'vintage' 186. . . although, the more learned members of the tnfj would be better judges than I.
Either way, it looks like a nice and unique horn.

Totally agree. I've put together some pretty freaky stuff that played quite well!

Just take a tape measure and go across the widest part of the bell. It's as easy as that! Very interesting horn!
