Having bought a larger horn I'm selling this horn that I've owned since 1969. It's a small-ish bore, front action (piston), with an upright bell. These are Belgian-made and were imported by Walter Sear in NYC in the 60's and 70's. This one is well-worn lacquer, however, remarkably free from dents and creases for a horn its' age. No issue with either valves or slides and a tendency toward playing somewhat sharp was resolved with a lengthened main tuning slide. I have a RB gig bag and the original mouthpiece and would like to get $2000 for the lot. Pictures can be provided with e-mail request.

I've never played a De Prins, how does the horn play? Is there anything you can compare it to?

I have this exact horn and can't think of another instrument quite like it. The range is excellent. The pedal tones do not feel "stuffy" and the higher range responds beautifully like an oversized euphonium. Mine doesn't have the intonation problem mentioned. The valve action is awesome for technical challenges as well. My only problem with this tuba is the size. I just don't feel comfortable when I need to have a BIGGER sound. However, it's great for practicing, string orchestras, and small to middle- sized ensembles. Hope this helps. SKM

Hi there, can you tell us the following:

Weight?
Approximate size? (3/4, 4/4, etc)
Would be interested in photos to judge condition
Thanks

A tuba I assume to be similar but in silver sold on this board in 2009 - it was listed at $1000.
"Walter Sear De Prins BBb tuba" There is some discussion of its qualities.

Pretty similar to the one previously listed -- not silver and with a fixed, non-detachable bell. The horn is approx 37" tall and has an 18 1/2 inch bell. I would probably describe is as a sub-4/4 horn. The overall dimensions are certainly not "small" but it is a rather small-bore horn, FWIW. Attached is a picture. Not great in terms of the original lacquer, but nonetheless, in good shape for a horn of it's vintage. I hope that this helps.

And here, next to the York Master that i purchased in lieu. It is essentially the same horn that Rick Denney has for sale which he describes as a "small 5/4 or a large 4/4."
