MW 6450/2 Handmade Baer, w/Case, Bag, PVAK, MAW-now $20,500!

Post by JHardisk »

Greetings!

I am putting my MW6450/2 Handmade "Baer" model tuba back on the market. I am the only owner, and purchased it new in 2009. Included are an MTS case and Altieri Gig bag. It is in terrific condition, with some light scratches on the rear body of the instrument. Price is lowered to $20,500 for the entire package.

The tuba is absolutely THE finest 6/4 tuba I've ever played. It is incredibly nimble and flexible, allowing me to utilize it in any setting imaginable. It's at home in the largest orchestra, and even in chamber settings, like the full time quintet I played in with the AF Band of Flight. I have never played another horn that speaks with such ease and clarity at any dynamic level.

I have made some adjustments to the tuba to increase its flexibility and sound production. These are detailed in the photos in the link below. The leadpipe has been taken off the bell, and a new brace fabricated at the mouthpiece. The tuba rings very sweetly as a result. The 5th valve slide has been trimmed down to play in tune when using the 245 combination. Slide rings have been added to 1st and 4th slide for ease of pulling, and I've had Saturn water keys installed on the rear of the 3rd and 4th slides (where the water actually collects). I have 2 sets of valves for the instrument; the original and a set of new MAW valves, and the Baer PVAK has been installed. The modifications/improvements have been done by master craftsmen, Martin Wilk (MAW creator), and Mark Metzler (well-known restoration specialist).

Also included are a modified MTS hard case (of which I have flown with multiple times with this tuba inside, including to and from Australia) which qualifies for airline weight restrictions, and a custom made Altieri gig bag.

New, this tuba sells for $30.5K. My tuba is like new, and hand-picked.
MAW valves are $1250
PVAK $100
Case $500
Altieri Gig Bag $200
Saturn Water Keys $100
All the work done to this instrument to fine tune it was done by master repairmen, Martin Wilk, and Mark Metzler.
Modifications $2500

That's a savings of over $11K!

It's a fantastic example of this model, and the new owner will be pleased! I've played upwards of 25 of the 6450's including having previously owned a production model. This one is exceptionally stellar, and will be sorely missed.

Terms of the sale:
I will not ship this tuba unless the full purchase price is in my hand and cleared. And even then, I am not excited about shipping for trials. I will happily pick a potential buyer up at Dayton International Airport and bring them here to try it. If shipping is absolutely necessary, buyer pays shipping and insurance.

Thanks for looking!! :tuba:

I need to chime in on this one. This is a FABULOUS instrument. John picked it out from a large number of both production and hand made models. This is, hands down, one of the best playing 6450's that's ever come out of the factory. I believe that the price John is asking is a great deal for someone looking for a true professional instrument, at home in just about any situation.

John's description of the instrument is spot on, and the work that Mark Metzler did on it even improved it.

This is a great instrument.

Black Friday price reduction. Asking $22,750 obo.

Please note that this is the handmade model, and not the production model. a great deal of care and craftsmanship have been put into this tuba, including the after market alterations.

With multiple auditions on the horizon, this would be the ideal time to pick up a ridiculously easy-to-play 6/4 CC tuba!

Make your auditioning life easier!

Bump!

I've had several requests for recordings and inquiries about how this tuba sounds.

Here is a video I just uploaded. It's a live and unedited recording I did back in 2013. I'm playing the 6450/2 in the back half of the video. The front half is mainly my former JBL classics.

Bump for this "dream" horn.

Still on the market, as a recent buyer just went MIA after committing to purchase.

Bump for the best version of this horn I've ever played! John has taken tremendous care of it and jazzed it up nice...the addition of MAW valves is righteous. If you're a fan of these horns and in the market, make the road trip. You won't be disappointed.

Final bump before I'm sending away on consignment (yes, I'm aware that this is what I stated in August).

As an aside, this should probably go without saying, but...

If you feel like you might be inclined to verbally commit to the point where I am packing this thing up, have agreed to allow you to have a trial period (at my apprehension, because I don't want to ship this due to potential damage), and am awaiting payment, and then back on on the weekend that we agree to ship it, please don't inquire.

I have now had two buyers reach this point. There must be something in the water. (End of rant)

Do come try this tuba if you're interested. I'll set you up in a fantastic space and we can have a great time exploring its sonic qualities. I'm not playing enough anymore to justify owning such a high-end tuba, and someone out there will be getting one hell of an easy instrument to play at a significant discount from new, with the added benefit of being worked over by some of the finest instrument repair technicians in the Midwest.

Drool. Since timing and the cost of travel is an issue for many folks, is it OK to ask where it'll be on consignment at?

Excellent question, Barry. I haven't committed yet, but it will either be BBC or Dillon, should I need to send it off on consignment. Mind you, in that scenario, the price will likely increase to mitigate some of the consignment expense and dealer pricing.
