Greetings!

I'm new to TubeNet and I have a Sanders B&S 4/4 CC 5 rotary valve tuba I'm considering selling. I also have an optional 5th valve slide. I bought this horn used in fall of 1989 through my teacher who is still the tubist with the Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra here in D.C. I've read what I could find about trying to determine the model of this horn. Engraved on the bell is: "Sanders" under which reads "B&S" under which reads "MARKNEUKIRCHEN-KLINGENTHAL" all of this surrounded by some engraved leaf work then under all of this "MADE IN GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC". The main tuning slide also has a B&S set in blue in the middle of it. The very end of the lead pipe has a "k" stamped in it then the pewter-colored 2-inch length of the lead pipe has a serial number of "184915" under which it also says "MADE IN GDR". I had all five valves overhauled once with new pads, springs, etc. I only played this horn from fall of '89 - spring of '94 and it has been sitting in a Donna Altieri gig bag since. Standard brass finish.

I'm curious if anyone knows how to identify the model of this horn and if you think there is any interest in buying this horn as I figure out pricing.

Most likely imported by Custom Music International in Ferndale, Michigan. Probably a good horn.

I played a tuba just like that in college, it was owned by my college. It was the same as a PT-3.

Very nice tuba and perfect for a college student. Wouldn't mind having another go at a rotary PT3. I think they are a little funny looking, but they play well and sound nice.

Price... Rough guess, up to $4000, depending on condition. I'd like to see it, if you have some photos.

Your pictures confirm my thoughts, that's a solid tuba. Might need a little cleaning and service if its sat unused for 20 years (unless I misunderstood that), but otherwise it should be a real workhorse.

I'll have to dig around a little for a photo of the horn I used to use, but I think the bell engraving is identical.

Beautiful looking horn, i'm just wondering if you would be willing to ship and is there a hard case as well?

I'd be glad to ship it but I do not have a hard case, just the soft gig bag, so I would need to get it properly packaged. Not sure how much packaging would add in cost, maybe $100-$150?

Your CC tuba is a B&S model PT-3 or in Europe, a 3097. It was likely made in the late 1980s and the 'K' on the receiver is the initial of the gentleman who did the final assembly of your tuba. This model is an interesting mix of BBb and F tuba parts that was extremely popular in the late 70s and 80s in the former GDR, especially in Berlin due to the influence of Dietrich Unkrodt.

I bought a rather tired one a few years back, and in addition to restoring it, I fabricated a new larger leadpipe and modified the body to fix the sharp 3rd partial. It is remarkably loud for a small CC tuba...
