Question -- is this an original 6 valve tuba? 5 of the rotors are in line with each other, the other is on a different plane.
PS -- beautiful tuba! DAAAAYUM!

PPS -- could you just once, post for sale some garbage-*** piece of **** butt-ugly tuba? You're killing me here.

You'd think for that kind of money the rotors would at least all turn in the same direction

I have played that one in Frankfurt, and it might be the very best euphonium out there ....bloke wrote:It is underneath...and I didn't want to make it TOO un-shiny...I would have had to ask too much for it.MikeMason wrote:And it's also not shiny.![]()

Re: SOLD B&S Symphonie Modell F tuba - 6-rotors 80/20 gold b
Dear Bloke,
Congrats on the quick sale.
I would like to add a few details to your ad.
B&S Symphonie F tubas in goldbrass/6 valves Modell 3100G were one of the most commonly produced versions in the 1970-80s in Europe. In Berlin alone, there are currently 18 of them in daily professional use. In addition, there are another 14 around the Berlin/Brandenberg area just that I'm aware of. I imagine the numbers to be similar in Leipzig and Dresden or in Poland as well. Several were also sold to the French and West German governments although not in the same concentration as in eastern Europe. Yellow brass versions were much less popular although they are also quite common.

The tuba in your pictures seems to have been extensively restored.
Three of the main body braces are not original, the top two being from an Amati. These braces are usually the first to break after a hard impact.

The 4th valve crook is also not original and the lower paddle assembly secondary brace is missing(also usually discarded after an overhaul when the bracing is smashed into the lower 4th valve tubing)

The weight of the tuba at 16.5lb seems a bit low. Most B&S Symphonies after a 3-4 overhauls weigh around 17lb with 16.45lb being the lowest that came in my shop. The tuba from my photos is, other than the miniball linkage, completely original.

The addition of marching hooks (Cerveny parts) and a lyre on the leadpipe + the Cerveny thumb ring points to service in a Polish windband as does the Amati/Cerveny braces used by most Polish repair shops.
I'm not sure why you would suggest the lack of lacquer has to do with the tuba having been in Europe. We do have running water, electricity and lacquer booths here too.
It's a shame whoever did the linkage conversion did not take the time to align the linkage perpendicular, but that wouldn't take long for a decent shop to sort it out.

If the new owner would like, I still have a few original GDR nickel silver thumb rings and original bracing stock;)
For those of you who didn't manage to be 'the one', I will probably have 2-3 identical versions coming through my shop in the next few months and probably a few more after that.
Best regards from Berlin,
TheBerlinerTuba

For that price, I would bump those to the top of the to-do list as well.TheBerlinerTuba wrote:For those of you who didn't manage to be 'the one', I will probably have 2-3 identical versions coming through my shop in the next few months and probably a few more after that.
Seriously though, that's very cool, and these are some really sweet tubas!

A couple questions then. Are there really that many professional tuba jobs around Berlin, why would b&s stop making this super popular model, and why can't they replicate their own design? It seems they have tried and failed.

You are so right, the older PT8 models were the best, this is a perfect case where bigger is not always better.MikeMason wrote:A couple questions then.
