For Sale: 1905 York Eb Tuba
This York “Monster” is a three piston top-action Eb tuba in bright silver finish. The bell diameter is 19-1/2". The serial number 21xxx gives it an approximate date of 1905. This horn is in exceptional condition. It is bright silver plated. Some very slight wear in the plating is evident in the usual locations, particularly on back of horn near the valve section. No major dents and only a few very minor dings. The valves are in good condition -- still good "pop" in each valve when slide is removed while valve is closed. All three valves are marked with correct serial number of horn. All tuning slides are free. There is no case. Harvey Hartman (Harv's Happy Horns) serviced this instrument several years ago. He adjusted the tuning slide lengths to put the horn in tune with itself. He raised the lead pipe off the bell to improve clarity of tone. He cleaned and flushed all valves and tubing, aligned the valves, installed nylon valve guides, replaced the water key cork, and converted the horn to Hetman synthetic valve oil and slide grease. Otherwise, the horn appears to be completely original. The horn has not been been used for performance since the servicing. This tuba is easy-blowing, has a lovely silky sound, slightly "bright", with remarkable presence. Altogether an excellent instrument. However, at the moment I have three Eb tubas -- a 1912 King that I use regularly, a 1919 Holton that has sentimental value, and this York. I only need one Eb, so have decided to put the York up for sale to someone who will love it and use it.
