Hey all! I'm contracted to play Mendelssohn's Elijah. I don't have an ophicleide so I'm playing the part in my bass tuba. Is there a general consensus on how dynamics are adjusted for the larger tuba?

I figure it's just play tastefully within context but dunno if you all had instruction that spoke otherwise. Looking forward to answers.

Thanks, Wade! Great advice. I know I can't change the timbre of my instrument to sound like another, but I wanted a feel for whether or not people had other ideas regarding between the two horns.

Anything Mendelssohn is usually more delicately orchestrated and my approach must be as such.

"Playing tastefully" is always acceptable.

Oh joy, it became more difficult when they located me on the stage with my bell pointing directly at a church drum cage (complete with plexiglass shield and felt roof and walls... guess my attempt at any dynamics just became moot
