20 inch laquer Kanstul bell. Beautiful shape, bought to attempt on my 36J, but am going a different direction now.

It fits 75% of the way, and the horn plays well with it, but the complete bell replacement will still happen, just not quite yet...

Nope, they are VERY close. The hope also was that it would bring the pitch down a hair to help the third partial, but it plays exactly the same. Sounds very good, but if I'm gonna drop some bucks in this, I'll aim for higher than very good.

Even when I called Kanstul (before I found this one) he has made a 36 J tenon, they are just a touch smaller and the 36J collar is smaller at the bottom than the top. Just ever so slightly. So the Kanstul bell will slide in to a point, then it stops short of fitting.....
FYI Ziggy will take orders for a 20J bell, but was not interested in fabricating a 36.. They would however make a whole new bell from the bow up....

And Bloke, I really like the laquer on Silver look. It just doesn't quite do what it needs to do....

I'm drooling.

If I didn't have an upright for my 20J already I'd be all over this. As far as fit. I have a pre WW2 22j that my upright bell does the same thing on. Goes in part way but not all the way.

Wow the 20" bell looks great with the front action. 24" still looks best on the top action for some reason.
The best 2xJ tuning is to have the main slide on the short side of the allowable range for your temp/circumstances, and the valve slides on the long side, and remember to keep both Bb's low. The slotting is wide enough that everything is in easy reach if you set it up right. Still a pig for parts that are fast or even remotely high, but it sounds so good in concert band or lite brass band.
