Has anyone noticed...

...there seems to be a preponderance of used 5/4 and 3/4 Rudi cc tubas for sale on the 'net, but relatively few, if any used 4/4 Rudi cc's for sale? (Relatively speaking, of course.) Could I be mis-interpreting this? (perhaps I've overlooked the assorted 4/4 Rudi's as they've become available.) If this phenomenon really exists, might one conclude that 4/4 Rudis are better/more-desirable horns than their bigger & smaller counterparts? This may look like a joke, but I'm curious.

my guess is that there are just more 3/4 and 5/4s out there,so naturally there are more for sale...

Maybe a divergent viewpoint from the conventional, but I never played a 4/4 Rudy that played as well as a 3/4 or 5/4 CC. I owned a fabulous 3/4 and played a bunch on Lee Stofers magnificent 5/4 CC. Not to say that there aren't great 4/4's(Sumner Erickson certainly made quite a nice noise on his), but my recollections are that they weren't close in quality or playing to the aforementioned ones. I think people may have shied away from them. Just a random musing.

Hi y'all.
I hope all are well.
FYI, I never owned a Rudy, but thanks for the compliment about my sound!
My orchestral tuba since 1983 is a Hirsbrunner 5/4 5 valve made in 1974.
I also play a Mirafone 186 5 U made around 1980. This is my solo, chamber music, Brahms, Mendelsohn horn.
I use a Conn Heleberg with all my tubas.
Please if anyone is interested in my new solo CD, let me know. I am working to get it out there. I am also available for recitals and master classes. Any help here would be GREATLY appreciated.
Enjoy your musicmaking!
Best wishes,
Sumner

Sumner,
You played one of the old tall bell 5/4's?. I always thought yours was a 4/4 Rudy. When you did your radio broadcast of the Vaughn-Williams in the mid-80's did you use the Mirafone?

It seemed a few years ago on the old 'net that there was a plethera of Rudy 4/4 for sale. I even bought one FS in '01. I was looking for a 3/4 and the 4/4 fell into my lap. Since I have a smaller horn, I would be interested in getting a 5/4 rudy. I wish I had the $$ 16 years ago when Steve Rosse was selling his. What a player!

Hey Chuck,
Yes, a 5/4 Hirsbrunner which I love! I first played it when I was a student at Curtis in 1980 and Paul Krzywicki owned it. He sold it to me a few years later.
Yes, the VW was played on my Mirafone, which I still own and love! I recorded by new solo CD on it.
Best wishes!

I was one of the first to buy Sumner's CD and it is a really good recording. I highly recommend it to everyone.
