This thing looks incredibly massive, has anyone ever played one of these? Bore seems small for the sheer size of the horn but perhaps thats for a reason.

That is a relatively small bore. About the same as a Mirafone 184.

Only if you are serious enough to not waste Matt's time... Call Matt and ask him about it. For an old tuba like that in the US, $3,000 is a pretty significant price, so I would expect it to be pretty decent.

Well I'm not really looking to buy it, as I've very happily come into possession of a gorgeous Alexander 164 BBb with a removable bell, the horn I consider to be the textbook definition of a German Kaiser. I'm just very curious as I'm a sucker for these horns, I love the German style horns with the towering bell stacks and rotor systems that just look so much more elegant than pistons, of course judt my opinion not trying to get fried here, but these types of tubas don't pop up often and I'm as much captivated by the history of them as I am by the sound. If I had a spare 3k in a shoe box I'd probably buy it just for the sake of being able to play and study it. Either way I hope this beast finds a home soon!

I tried this tuba while I was down at Dillon's this past weekend. It is a very similar design to the Cerveny 601(which Dillon also had that day, but had been already sold), and sounds similar, but a little darker with me playing it. It was a great horn, someone I'll be happy.

I just wanted to post some pics of the latest work that I had done on one of my horns.

It's a Huttl/Graslitz 6/4 Kaiser BBb. It had clockwork spring linkages and levers, he also gave it a good cleaning, and took out some dents in the lead pipe and main tuning slide.





Chuck MacAlexander is a Master Brass tecnician.
His work is always meticulous, clean, and every horn comes back playing better than I imagined they could.

This is a great example of a German Kaiser, Hand Made BBb tuba. I'm only selling to downsize and buy a condo!

I played this Hüttl at Frank's home some weeks ago, before he took it to Dillon. A very powerful instrument and very expressive. As long as you truly center each note, the voice is focused, somewhat dark, and very present -- somewhat like a big Mirafone in regard to centering. Despite its size, it is capable of true pianissimo -- somewhat like a Conn 20J in regard to dynamics. It does not require lots of wind to produce even the loudest notes -- again, similar to a Conn 20J in regard to airflow. Ergonomically, this horn is well-balanced, the finger paddles are quite comfy, and the reach around the bell is comfy and not a stretch.
