I am in the marked for a largish 5/4 BBb or 6/4 BBb.
Needs 5 valves or easy fix for a 5th.

I have the BMB 765, and TBH, I am quite happy with it but wants an even more easy blow,
independent 5th and less "king spinn" to empty the horn.
Would prefer rotary, but not locked on to that

Instruments of special interest,
Miraphone Siegfried
RM 5/4 BBb
MW Fasolt
Kanstul 5433 Grand BBb

.....or any other stupid good 5/4 6/4 BBb of recommendation

I tried this model for a week as well, and can confirm these are big tubas with a big sound.
I would call this a big 5/4.

Have you tried a Rudy 4/4? They are quite big as well, can be had with 5 valves.

The Gronitz BBb like Peach has would be a very nice one as well, but hurry to Hamburg, seems like Mr Kleine-Horst is going to retire next year...

Have not tried either the Rudy or the Gronitz

Thought the PBK was bigger thou. Having had the Nirschl/Besson they look close to the same (?)
Guess it's the angle/picture

Yes, I did see that one.
I had the 601 CC back when.....And the tuba literary played by it-selves.
Had some "barking" tendencies and a real dent magnet, but yes
It is an option. Adding a 5th is probably farily easy job too

Thank you, I've noticed, but I do get it at lower cost more locally :-)
(edit: the price in $$ is good, but the currency is up over 40% compared to 2013)

I'm the previous owner of that horn. Steve hasn't put up any new pictures, but if you look at the picture of the "sold out" 164 BBb it's the identical tuba. This one defines the kaiser sound - it's the 163 taken to the next level.

Why not??
A BBb needs as much a 5th valve as any CC tuba (that one tone makes no big difference imho), lots of low stuff in today's band repertoire...
You can keep moving tuning slides 1 and 4 up and down if you like doing that, but I prefer a 5th valve in the low register!

I like the 5th for the ease of playing. Simple as that.
A lot of the literature I play involves a lot tech stuff, and "sliding around" every now and than is not really an option.

Can I manage with 4? Sure! I can manage with 3 with good spoken privileged notes.
Does the 5th ease it up. Sure does, and if I end up with the Cerveny I'm pretty sure it will end up with a 5th

Placed a few adds on a few of my (less used) tubas.
If they sell, that Alex and others in that price range should be obtainable :-) :tuba:

58mark wrote: Speaking of 4 valve CC's, I've played 4 valve CC tubas for the last 28 years. Only one time in that period did I wish I Had a 5th valve, so I extended the 4th valve tubing on my horn temporarily for that one song to give me the note I needed.
I think we agree, if you dont need a 5th on a CC tuba, no reason for putting one on your Bbb.
I need to slide tubes for the Bbb fingerings you describe, so adding a 5th on mine should be an improvement...

Wow!!! (1 Kroner equals .12 dollars and 1 Kroner equals .11 Euro). Since USD and Euro are ALMOST equal today, are you saying that the Buffet Group is selling brand new tubas from Germany to a store in Norway for WAY less Euros than they are selling the same horn to us gullible American dealers paying with Dollars converted to Euros? Why did you even post a request when you can buy a great new Meinl Weston for less money than anyone else in the world?

I'm going to talk to the wife about going to Norway on vacation and see if I can't bring back a tuba to re-sale in the USA that will pay for my trip.

There has to be a catch but I'm going to seriously bring it up to the wife about checking out a vacation in Norway.

Thou your price is very good Mr Walters, the fall out due to taxes and currency makes it 30% more expensive than for me to buy in Germany or UK

Thank you all for chiming in
Thank you to Matt W. who offered a very nice price on a Fafner 5V,
but unfortunately export from US is not very favorable due to currency and tax
Good for US economy, bad for me.

I have narrowed it down to a special order 5V MW Fasolt.
That was what was on top of my short list, but it was tough to keep priorities straight when offered a Siegfried for the same price

Thanks guys

1. You're horn is hard to blow through? Mine seems to suck the air out of me if I give it my all.

2. Independent 5th is something I would agree with too. Granted the dependent 5th is great idea to keep the tone and response unaltered as much as possible with cash register playing, I would have bought a 5 valve horn if it were independent. I like being able to play low B on 235, would make the "Ride" that much easier to play.

3. Why are you having to "king spin" your horn? Take out the mouthpiece, lean the tuba back so that the mouthpipe is facing the floor and press one valve at a time. The spit just comes pouring out. After that, dump the bottom 4th valve slide and dump the main and you're done.
