Conn International 2300 BBb *Now with Pictures*

I have a tuba that is in need of a less neglectful home. I am initially asking for $2800. I would hope the members of this forum would let me know if this is a ridiculously high or low asking.

Image

It is labeled as a Conn International model 2300, made in Germany, serial number 332949. It is a BBb horn, built somewhere around 2001. My research seems to say that it was built by B&S and is identical to the Musica 2300 or the B&S/VMI 101. Someone with more knowledge of the manufacturing will have to confirm that.

The horn is in very good shape, but is in need of a tune up. The only dents are fairly minor ones around the bell. There is some very minor scratching of the finish in a few spots, the worst of which is near the bottom bend. The valves and slides are stiff from the horn sitting entirely unused for the past 6 years. I would be willing to get these cleaned up into full working order before sending it off to the new owner.

Included with the horn will be a B&S 18 mouthpiece and a hard cover wood case with wheels. The mouthpiece is in extremely good shape. The case has some minor damage from being moved around over the years. There are a couple spots of tearing of the vinyl wrap and there is some rust on one of the latches.

A history of this tuba:
I am the original owner. I played tuba in middle school and high school. This instrument was a gift from my father in high school, I can't remember the exact year, but it was roughly 2001. I played it regularly until I graduated. Once I went off to college I had no opportunity to play, so the tuba stayed in it's case at my dad's house in Alaska for over 6 years. After college I moved to the Seattle area, my sister convinced me to briefly join a concert band at the University of Washington. By then the slides and valves had become stuck from neglect, so I took it in to Oberloh Woodwind and Brass Works in Seattle. They cleaned it, freed the seized valves and got it back into playing condition. I ended up only participating in one performance with that UW concert band, and the tuba went back into it's case for the next 6-7 years. For the past several years, my wife has been nagging me to get rid of it. Well, we now have our first child on the way, so I think it is finally time to send this instrument off to someone who will give it the respect it deserves.

I think these horns are great horns, and like another poster commented, if you ever see yourself playing again, you really should keep this horn if you can.

Good luck!

Thanks for your comments ValveSlide and MWoj. You are both basically saying exactly the same thing as I've been telling myself since 2009 (the last time I played for more than 2 minutes at a time), but it is quite demoralizing to pull it out of it's case and realize that it has been so long since you played that one of the valves has seized up, the others are slow or sticky, you can't remember half your fingerings, and can only read music half as well as you could in middle school.

This horn deserves better than that, and with limited storage space and a baby due in just 3 weeks, now is the time to move this instrument to a more deserving home.

Sorry about the horn, but congrats about the kid. My son is a year and a half, and just goes nuts when I play my tuba for him. He wants to try it himself, and thinks its the funniest thing.

Maybe take some of the sale money and set it aside, and buy something later on? Just a thought!

Assuming your profile info matches the horn - is this horn in WA? Would love to forward this to a student but we are on the other side of the country. :)
