That's nice! Definitely a rare horn. All the 10J's you see now are worn lacquer with crushed bells. Nice to see one looking good like this. These horns don't really get the respect they deserve! 10J's were the standard Conn tuba back in the late 60's and 70's. For those people who didn't want a huge 6/4 20J, you got a 10J as they were pretty much your only options. Very versatile tubas that perform well in concert band settings, small ensemble, and solo performances. .695 bore is a pretty big bore for a small tuba that's why they can do well in large bands without sounding nasty! Love these horns. Planning on getting mine overhauled one day. Well worth $650

It didnt always look that good. Was pretty dented and was so tarnished I thought it was a brass horn when I bought it.

That's a great looking tuba and I'm really tempted. But, and there's always a but, it's three valves and that means the player still has those issues with intonation on the 1-3 and 1-2-3 combinations, right? I don't see a trigger anywhere to extend a slide to compensate for this? I'm getting old and need something smaller and lighter (I have a 4 valve Reynolds Contempora), but quality is important to me and I've always been a Conn fan. If I thought that there was a workaround for this issue I'd probably make an offer. Any comments, suggestions?

Also, what is the bell size and overall length? And, can that large ding in the bow be removed?

Thanks,
Steve
10J's are pretty good when it comes to the 1-3 and 1-2-3 combos. Mine doesn't have any major tuning issues but anything lower than 1-2-3 E natural using false fingerings sounds pretty bad. But why would you have a need to play that low on a 3/4 BBb anyway? They are great horns. The big ding in the bow can be removed as long as it's not under a brace/guard. If it were under a brace they would have remove the bow to get to it, but it doesn't appear to be.

Overall length would be 33" and the bell diameter is 18". Hope this helps!

What Tubajohn said is true for this horn. That pesky dent just would not come out with my set of dent balls. (not from lack of trying). The point is moot. I have the horn rented out for a Christmas concert and I'm pretty sure they are just going to purchase it outright. Thanks for the interest. :tuba:
