Re: Alexander Vienna-style 3+3 F tuba $4,500

Post by barry grrr-ero »

So I'm guessing that the best way to learn this thing is to start out with tunes that only require your 'normal' 1st, 2nd and 3rd valves; then add the 'normal' 4th valve, then move on to the 'extra' valves from there. Is that the way you approached it? . . . It must have taken a while before you were ready to tackle Vaughan Williams.

If a person can get those fingerings down, these might be fairly fun to play on.

I took that approach, more or less. Left hand 1+2 align with normal tuba 1+2 so the most basic scales weren't a problem, and just add valves from there. It's a lot like learning a new key of tuba - once your brain is reprogrammed, like, "Okay, I'm in Vienna F tuba mode now," much like you have to be in "CC tuba mode" or "euphonium mode" for some players, things start to make sense and it becomes automatic. The best way to learn a new fingering system is just to launch yourself into the music and play, then spend some time in the practice room later figuring out if/how you screwed up.

Six valves means there are many, many different combinations to play with. Definitely a rare and unique instrument.

All offers and trades considered. A couple weeks of practice and I felt pretty comfortable on this instrument.

BTW, that original fingering chart was pretty cool, too. :tuba:

Yep:

I have found some better combinations than the ones suggested in this chart, but most of these work well.

Price reduction. Open to trades. I'd like to move this before springtime.

Will be putting this on consignment or eBay sooner rather than later. All offers considered, trades welcome.

Bump back to the top. Was planning on taking this to Dan Schultz to address the linkage but got busy again. The year is almost over, so I will have some time for a linkage conversion soon. Reaching out again to interested parties.

I will be moving to Connecticut in July. I would ideally like to sell this before then, but if you are in New England and willing to wait, I could haul it up to save on shipping.

Trade offer fell through. I'm pretty flexible on price and open to all trades for tuba(s) of equal value. Need to liquidate in preparation for my upcoming move.
