Hold up....that is a Daryl Smith?

What is up with the big slide coming up behind the first valve slide? Also, the wrap looks different. The slides seem spaced out more. Finally, that's a rotax rotary valve. All the Daryl Smith's I have ever seen looked like this:

Your instrument looks to me like the rare KAB 77! I have never see one in person before and would be very interested to know more about this horn. Where did you get it? How long have you had it? How's it play? Did this model improve on the "stuffiness" that Kalison D.S. models were known for? Look at the picture of the KAB 77 below. That is the horn in the picture.

Wow! This is definitely news to me. It says Daryl Smith on the bell, so I just assumed that's what it was. The KAB 77 looks much more like my horn though. Thank you for bringing this up.

My parents bought it for me from the Tuba Exchange in 2002, so I've had it for nearly 15 years now. I've always loved this horn. It plays with a bright and clear sound, but it has a lot of warmth. The intonation was always spot on, especially after figuring out the best fingering combos. I can't speak for other Kalison models, as I don't think I've really played any others, but I will say I love the horn and I'm only getting rid of it because I just don't play enough anymore

Interesting that is says Daryl Smith on the bell. I'm going to guess that the "classic" Daryl Smith, and the upgraded KAB 77, used the same bell. Your valve cluster and leadpipe have screws that connect it to the bell correct? It would be very easy for the factory to use a Daryl Smith bell, and put the "upgraded" valve section onto that. Since Daryl Smith was a well known model, Tuba Exchange could have continued to sell it as a Daryl Smith, even if it was a completely different model.

ORRRRR.....the bell that came with your instrument accidentally got switched with a Daryl Smith bell some time before your parents purchased it! Somebody out there might have a "classic" DS with a stamp that says KAB 77 on it. Like I said though, I've never seen a KAB 77, so I don't have any idea what the bell is supposed to say.

Kalison went out of business shortly after they created the KAB 77, Pro 2001 C, and Pro 2001 F tuba models in the early 2000's. That is why those three designs are so rare. Not a whole lot made it over here before the company folded.

Good luck on the sale! I'd be interested myself if I had the cash on hand.

1. Read Watchman's post. This is not a DS but a 77. Both are very good, but the KAB77 is relatively unknown here in the States.

2. Check the date of the ad and of the last post. Both were four years ago. It is highly unlikely that the seller still has it but has not updated his ad in four years.

Have a good day.
