1966 Holton 345 BBb Tuba For Sale PRICE DROP

Post by Dr. Dave »

Five years ago, I bought this 1966 Holton 345 BBb (lacquer finish) from Baltimore Brass, and have enjoyed playing it for a number of seasons in our local concert band. Reason for selling is because over the summer I bought another Holton 345 BBb, satin silver, with a MW 2165 valve set from Baltimore Brass and need the proceeds from the sale of the '66 345 to "reimburse" purchase of the silver 345.

The '66 345 (serial no. suggests the horn was made in mid-1960's) is all-original, 750 bore, 20” bell, 34” high, weighs 28 lbs. Not an air hog, easy to play. Valves have good compression, has a presence of sound whether played soft or loud, very manageable 6/4 tuba intonation. I believe tuning can be improved/made easier with a few simple modifications such as cutting 1st valve slide, taking some dents out of the tuning slide crooks. I was going to do those things but then bought the silver 345. Has a big dent in the bottom bow, (was there when I bought it) doesn’t look nice, but as Dave Fedderly said at the time, the dent doesn’t affect how the horn plays, and he was right.

Nice thread on TubeNet about the history of the 345

No case. Asking $4700 OBO -- PRICE DROP $4450 OBO
I have the box w/all packing materials Baltimore Brass shipped the silver 345 in, so will be able to properly pack and safely ship the 66' 345 without case, via FedEx Ground.

Horn is located in Phoenix, serious buyers welcome to come and test drive. Can ship (buyer pays shipping) to lower 48 US states via FedEx Ground.

Please PM if interested.
Thanks,
Dave

Beautiful tuba. Curious, how does it compare to your silver 345?

Thank you. The silver 345 BBb (w/MW 2165 valve set, and an Allied American leadpipe) has a more focused sound than the lacquer '66 345, but I've liked them both a lot and hope a new owner will like the '66 345 as much as I have. According to Baltimore Brass, the silver 345 BBb, which has the large "Frank Holton" on the bell, suggests this dates the build of this horn sometime in the 1950's, don't know if that or the MW valve set and/or lead pipe give the more focused sound or not. Both have are a pleasure to play!

Accepting reasonable offers on the '66 345 BBb!

Link to recording of live concert band performance (of American Barndance), I played the "66 345 in this concert and a mic was located above where I was sitting - can hear the 345 well at 00:15, 00:29, 1:34-1:55, 2:18 and 2:48

I’d like to see a pic of the silver one. I think I may have been the one who commissioned that project and enjoyed playing it for several years. Sold on eBay and shipped to California 10-12 years ago.

Mike,

Here's a photo of the 345BBb with the MW 2165 valve set I purchased from Baltimore Brass - has the large Frank Holton engraving on the bell

Maybe not , unless the body has lost a lot of plating. But same scenario. Made a great sound.
