The fifth valve is a flat whole step. It’s mainly used in the lower register, and allows you to play a pedal Db without lipping it down. It also puts other notes more in tune with each other. On my 1293, I use 5+2+3 for the Db and Gb below the staff.
Hope that helps

Re: Mirafone 186-5U CC tuba in Cincinnati
Eb is kind of a funny note for me. 1/4/5 is a little low, and 2/4/5 is a little high. Depends on the tuba which fingering works better.geomiklas wrote:C# and low F# 1/2/5MikeMason wrote:I’ve come into possession of a 1973 5u. Which notes and what fingerings you using 5th for?
F 2/3/5
E 4/5
Eb 1/4/5
D 3/4/5
Db 1/3/4/5
Also, 1/2/3/4/5 gives a soft (less harsh) and controlled pedal CC.
