I'm selling a Conn 36J with an upright 24" 25J bell. Basically I traded the front facing original 36J bell with an upright one a while back.

So! About the horn. This is a wonderful example of a 36J. I successfully used it this past Spring Semester in the TCU bands to play a range of modern music. I ALWAYS played concert F open. I will say, however, that, depending on the direction I'm hitting it from, I'll sometimes play low F with 1 and 3 (?). Tuning in all registers is easily manageable, even in the extreme high register (although alternate fingerings are needed above high Eb..). I use 3rd valve normally for G, but I play my D in the staff open. The only place where tuning becomes strange is high F, where the only workable fingering is 2 and 3 (F in the staff is played open). Everything below that is relatively normal.

The volume of sound this horn produces is absolutely phenomenal. It isn't like a 2xJ horn.. the sound is much darker and blends better in modern ensembles. I can't say if this is because of the short vs. long action valves or other design variations, but its a distinctly different sound. I provided a few excerpts of the horn being played in the google doc that is attached here. Please try and ignore the inconsistencies in my playing, I'm a fairly mediocre non-music major who just does a few ensembles for fun. I'm cutting back on the amount of time I spend doing music things because I need to focus more on my engineering studies.

Valves are in good shape, slides move super easily, blah blah blah. The horn would nearly look brand new if it weren't for some minor dents here and there. The serial number dates it to 1927-1928, and I've had it for about 2.5 years of its long long life. The original (these are 1920's) cases are included, and I can take them out of storage and take pictures of them, as well as more pictures of the horn on request, I just really wanted to get this listing up quickly. To clarify! I am selling the horn with JUST an upright bell, no recording bell. I'm asking $4̶,8̶0̶0̶ $4̶,5̶0̶0̶ $4̶,2̶0̶0̶ $3,950. Price slightly negotiable.

The mouthpieces I most like using with it are the standard Helleberg and the Loud LM-6

Please call or email regarding your 36J cases. I would like to build cases for a 1935 Conn 26J and have questions about the dimensions of your cases, esp the body case. Might even be willing to buy yours if it (they) are for sale separately from your 36J. No PM's please. Thank you. Paul.

Great looking horn. The 3Xs and 2Xs I have played can put out a lot of sound while having a very nice velvety quality in softer dynamics.

Hi Andrew, Would be very grateful if you would contact me about your 36J cases. I would like to build cases for my 1935 Conn 26J and have questions about the dimensions of your cases. I am particularly interested in the thickness (small dimension) of the body case. Might even be willing to buy your cases if it (they) are for sale separately from your 36J. Please do not PM. Thank you. Paul.

I originated this query on May 5th under "Wanting To Buy / Seeking". Received one helpful suggestion from TubaJohn. You are not correct -- the 2xJ horns do not all have the same dimensions -- the 26J is roughly 9½" from front to back, while my 20J is about 8½" front to back -- the difference being in front versus top valves. My 20J case will not close with the 26J body in it.

The next obvious move was to ask Andrew for help, because he specifically mentions 36J cases. But Andrew does not seem inclined to help.

For personal reasons, I never use "TubeNet -- The Bulk Of The Musical Talk". If you would like to discuss further, please email proscientific AT verizon DOT net or call 908-850-1636. Please do not PM.

Respectfully, Paul.
