Because I don't remember seeing it done...

...how difficult is it to replace the valve block with a modern 4- or 5-valve section, and keep in BBb (and not chop it to CC and destroy it)?

Wow! In the acoustic guitar world there is always a lot of talk about a “birth year” Martin or Gibson. I never thought of having a birth year tuba!

You could probably order a JP CC valve set from Bloke and plug it in

Nice horn - so many of these (former school horns) present with trashed bells ) - yours looks really good! (I'd love to get my hands on a bell like it :tuba: )

Changing out valvesets for these horns is a pretty straightforward matter - the bugle is so large that just about any 19mm/.750 bore set will fit with little to no modification. The only caviat to using one from bloke (JP) is that the valve circuits come in CC length - they would need to be modified (lengthened, maybe longer ferrules?) to BBb (but this may still be the most cost-effective plan).

FWIW, they're also great players in 3 valve form (false tones, etc.).
Bump for Mr. YORK-aholic!
