VMI 3302 5 valve BBb- SOLD!

For sale is a VMI 3302 BBb tuba. It is located in Normal, Illinois. I'd prefer to not ship it, but I can arrange it if the buyer pays for it. It would be a better idea to come try/buy, and transport it on your own, safely. I'm asking $3500. Mechanically, everything is in great shape. All 5 valves move easily, slides pull easily and are adjustable while playing. Cosmetically, there is some lacquer wear on the bottom bow and on the back of the tuba, as well as some dents, which should be easily removed with some dent balls. None affect the sound. I am am the third owner of this tuba. It plays wonderfully. Low register is powerful and easy to play. I use third valve for G at the bottom of the staff and D below it. The fifth valve makes the pedal Eb, C, and B in tune. The Eb is solid as a rock. All in all, it's a great BBb tuba. Since I'm looking to buy a CC tuba, I have to sell this one. I think it is a perfect tuba for a high school student, a college student who would like to own a tuba of their own, or somebody who wants a great 5 valve BBb tuba. I think it would be great for any university or even high school program. It's built like a tank. The horn will come with an MTS hard case. The wheels still function. Message me with any questions. If you are interested in this tuba and the euphonium I have for sale, PM me. I'll sell you both for $5000.

Just curious if this is my old horn. I sold it in Palos Hills, IL in early to mid 2009.

I can vouch for this tuba, having played this specific one many times. It's a great horn for the money. It has a rich, very dark tone. Definitely perfect for band. And hey, a 5-valve BBb beats a 4-valver any day of the week in my book.

VMI is the factory which B&S horns are made in. It uses the same parts and is of a comparable quality build-wise. It is a very sturdy horn in my opinion.

A great BBb tuba. AND it is a 5-valver! Those of you looking into a King 2341 need to seriously look into this tuba. (Bump)

(1) Pls forgive the dumb question, but I am intrigued by this horn - what does the 5th valve allow you to do on a Bb horn ? What are its practical applications where one is most likely to be using a B horn ?

(2) It's a larger bore than the 2341, right ? How will the bore difference affect how it plays, how comfortable one is from an air support needed standpont, etc ?

Thanks

Thanks for the bump!!

The 5th valve comes into play in the low register mostly, giving you a rock solid pedal Eb, and an in tune pedal C, and a real pedal B natural with all 5 valves down. It also gives a ton of alternate fingerings if you need them for intonation.

The bore of the horn is larger than the King. I believe it is .748 and .787 in the 5th valve. This tuba isn't an air hog in my opinion. I love this tuba. Great intonation, fat low register, AND a fifth valve!

I have the 4-valve version of this horn and it is... awesome. There is a lot to like about it. In addition to what has been said above...

--It is a nice squat horn that is extremely easy to handle and hold. 36" tall
--It plays better than any horn I have played (including 2341's).
--It has a water trap just after the leadpipe that collects about half the condensation in the horn. Takes about 6 seconds to pull it and dump. Nice.

I'll throw in the Altieri gig bag I had made for this tuba. It is burgundy and comes with the rain bonnet. So, that is $4000 for the tuba, hard case and now gig bag.
My original plan was to keep the bag for the CC I will purchase, but the 1293 I will get is too big for it.

This seems like a smoking good deal at $3500. The market for nice BBB tubas must be soft. Free bump!

Come on, $3,500 for a great 5v BBb tuba + hard and soft cases is a no-brainer. That price is what a used modern King 2341 goes for, and the 2341 doesn't have 5 valves, and isn't built as well as this VMI (B&S).
And the VMI plays AT LEAST as well as the King :)
If only I had the money....(bump)
