Horns for sale (Price Drop)

Post by Tommckamey »

I am offering a few horns from my collection for sale to raise money for purchase of a Besson 793 or 794 (in case anyone wants to offer a trade instead) : Horns are located in Carol Stream, Illinois zip 60188 (N.W.suburb of Chicago) and available for pick-up or shipping.

Meinl Weston 2141: 5/4 Eb tuba in bright silver finish. Nearly perfect condition, 2 or 3 very small shallow dings, and scratches. The silver plate finish is 100% $6,000.00

Mirafone 186-TU ~ 4/4 BBb tuba 1970, good condition, no large dents, no holes or patches. Bell has had some creases removed and lacquer finish is < 60%. Horn is very playable and in good mechanical condition but cosmetically poor. $2,500.00

Conn Double Bell Euphonium - 1930's era. Satin Silver finish ~ 90%. Easy restoration project. Some shallow dents on back, and one spit valve has come loose, but is included. Valves are worn, but the horn plays well and sounds good. $1,400.00

Reasonable offers welcome.

I don't consider myself an expert on intonation, and I've not checked it against a meter, but it seems good to me. I think comparable to my mirafone 186 and better than either of my sousaphones (Conn 20K and Reynolds Contempora). I also have a 3 valve compensating Besson, and I'm thinking it's not quite as good as that horn, specifically on intonation, but not bad either.

It’s a typical Miraphone 186. These horns were always held up as sort of the “gold standard” for intonation on BBb tubas. Seems like every add or reference I’ve seen on this model mentions intonation as a selling point. That said I cannot say I notice any great improvement over my other horns, but the intonation seems fine to my ear.

For anyone interested in a horn, and traveling west to ITEC, I’m less than 30 min. N of I 80 and would be willing to meet up at a convenient spot.
