Excuse my ignorance, but what is the purpose of the black wrapping?

The lacquer finish has worn off in many places on the body of the tuba. My skin is very sensitive. Raw brass causes significant irritation to my skin.

Haha lol Not much that you can do to change the sound of Conn 2XJ tubas. Maybe a LeFreque tone bridge? I haven't tried one of those. Lol
