I have decided to put of my 2155R up for sale. As far as my knowledge is, there were only a hundred or so of these made. A little bit of history of the instrument. This tuba was created with the help of Jeff Funderbunk as Meinl Weston was trying to computer engineer an Alex 163 of their own. They got exactly that with all of the tendencies of an Alex as well. This instrument seriel number is CF-103 making it an early production model. There are a couple of dents on the garland of the bottom bow but none of which made it through the garland. (see pictures)
Since I acquired the instrument, I have done some modifications to open the sound and also fix the intonation. This horn was worked on by Lee Cutchin at Ciomit and consulted on by Warren Deck as to how to improve the instrument. Every note on this horn can be played in tune and it sounds huge! The horn had an AGR made by Matt Walters at Dillon to fix the receiver issue. This leadpipe is similar in size to that of a 2165. The bore specifications if I remember correctly are .804 -.846. The sound is that of no other 5/4 I have played. It is very rich and full of core. It can fill any ensemble with sound is even all the way throughout.
I am asking 7,000 OBO plus shipping costs if necessary. Horn is located in Denver,Co. Comes with a hard case. I currently have my eye on a few 6/4 as to why I am looking to sell. If someone has a 2165 or an Eastman 836 York they would like to trade I am open to that as well.

^ Actually, there were not even 100 made. Years ago at a tuba conference, I asked the Meinl-Weston rep. guy how many 2155R's were made, and he told me "between 20 - 25". So, my understanding is that each one is somewhat different, and they were never put into full production
Anyway, I've had mine for nearly 20 years (bought used, in excellent condition back then) and have done mods to it (different/smaller leadpipe, different 5th valve tubing, etc) to improve it.
I agree the sound is very deep, velvety and full of core. The sound is dark, rich and dense, with some bright colorful overtones.

Sounds great in orchestra AND band.
There are several 'updated' models of tubas out now that are 'descendants' of the old 2155R.
Yeah, they are not point-and-shoot tubas; but not the hardest to play, either. Like you said, if some mods were done to improve the ease of pitch and response, they can be played well and in tune.
Good luck with the sale

^ Intonation tendencies are still there, just maybe less pronounced and a little easier. The leadpipe/mouthpipe has more effect on response than anything, and an easier response makes intonation easier. But the leadpipe/mouthpipe is also a tapered part of the tuba, so it will have a small effect on pitch tendencies, but not a huge part.

2165 leadpipe is SMALLER?!
What if the magic 45SLP leadpipe was used instead? But I obviously know Warren would have considered that, too!

It will choke it down and make the slots feel smaller and more backpressure to the tuba. Some people like that if the tuba feels to open and too much of an air hog

How tall is it, and what is the bell diameter?
Also... Does it share much of anything with the liston 2155? IIRC, I think the 2155R is just a totally different animal than the 2155.
I've played a "bad one" before. Nothing lined up, and it just felt funny all around. I figured it had as much to do with unaligned valves and air leaks as anything else.
Nice looking tuba!

Hi Bort! Hope you are doing well! The tuba stands at 39.5" and the bell is 17.5". The leadpipe is the same size as a stock 2165. It does share some characteristics as the 2155 piston version as this was the basis for the piston model when they redesigned it. This in actuality is the predecessor to the Tuono but to me it plays much bigger and freer than a Tuono. The AGR made a big difference when it came to aligning the slots of the instrument and thus the intonation became much easier to get the hang of.
