I have a 6/4 Holton short action recording horn made in 1936. I sadly can't hold onto it anymore. Played it in high school for a year or two. Looking to trade for a smaller horn. 4/4 CC preferably or BBb. Would sell for 2700 obo. Located in North Alabama area

Super cool!

I used to own one with a Mirafone 190 bell. It had a great sound. If I’d have kept it, the next step was to put a VMI 4+1 BBb valve set on it. I wasn’t in a rush because the false tones were so solid.

What mine looked like:

That's funny! Attaching the 190 bell to the 109 (Holton's model number for this tuba.)

I had a 190 BBb long ago, and now have the Holton 109, but they will always be separate tubas. The Holton sound seems to be there, weird valves notwithstanding - very musical, if a little on the dark side.

That’s what kinda made that frankentuba interesting. It had a rather unique sound for a 6/4. It was kinda like the typical “American” style 6/4 up until 80% throttle. Then it had a sharper edge to the sound not unlike most Mirafone’s do at louder levels.

Nonetheless, these old Holtons are great tubas to own and enjoy.

Yeah, they are quite clever. An unrolled rotary valve.

Joe just likes the validation that a Miraphone 190 CC bell works well on a BAT. :P
